Looking Back: Elon Musk, October 1999
I met with Elon Musk back in 1999 when I was a data research analyst at Jupiter Communications. At that point, I didn’t yet have a coverage area of my own but was part of the “Data Research Group” which built all the forecast/projection models for Internet tech, retail, advertising and banking adoption. One of the forecast areas I was working on was for online financial services adoption. I recall this meeting mainly because I learned that Elon Musk was South African and we’d briefly been at the same high school at the same time, Pretoria Boys’ High. I recently stumbled across these presentation materials and thought I’d share them given that 13+ years have elapsed.
During the presentation no mention was made of “emailing money” to a friend, if I recall that was shared in a subsequent phone call where Elon sent me $20. I had seen a lot of online banking products, and liked the S&P 500 fund but I thought, damn, that emailing money thing was really awesome! It wasn’t an initial part of the business though in these materials.
